"Bonita is the hidden jewel in the South Bay with its established neighborhoods, beautiful canyons, wide open spaces and mature landscaping," said Mike Watson, a local real estate agent for Keller Williams Realty. Home prices range from $350,00 to $4,500,000. The median price in August, 2017 for a single-family home in Bonita was $660,800.

"Many of the homes are custom built and some have fantastic views of downtown San Diego and the Pacific Ocean. With two golf courses, several horse riding trails, Bonita is a wonderful family-oriented community," Watson added.

The Bonita Museum offers historical and contemporary artifacts, photographs, and other materials relating to the history of the area. Jere Kausch is a volunteer at the museum bookstore and has lived in Bonita since 1984. "It's a great place for kids," Kausch said. She recalls how her two children enjoyed riding horses along the Sweetwater River Valley. "You can ride horses all around the golf course, past the new nature the preserve and all the way to summit park," Kausch added. Bonita is considered a rural and equestrian enclave in the middle of suburbia where many residents keep their own horses and can be seen riding the trails. The Bonita Valley Trails organization monitors the network of trails throughout the valley.

The climate in Bonita is a combination of the coastal and inland valley climates of San Diego County. Warmer and during the May Gray and June Gloom periods than coastal areas but not as hot as inland valleys such as El Cajon, or even nearby Spring Valley. In summer, Bonita's climate is usually pleasant. There are a number of parks including Fred H. Rohr Park, Sweetwater Regional Park, Sweetwater County Park and Sweetwater Reservoir Riding and Hiking Trail.
