Mira Mesa surburb near tech centers of San Diego

Mira Mesa is quickly becoming one of San Diego's largest communities. With a growing population of over 80,000, the area possesses a favorable proximity to all that San Diego has to offer. Bordered by Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve to the north, Lake Miramar to the east, Miramar Air Base to the south and the tech-community of Sorrento Valley to the west, Mira Mesa is essentially a suburban city onto itself.

Mira Mesa's beginnings started during the 1950s. The increased need for housing was due to the growing use of the military base located in Miramar. The established community boasts outstanding, award-winning schools like Mira Mesa High School, Challenger Middle School, Ericson Elementary School, Hickman Elementary and Walker Elementary - all which have received the California Distinguished School Award.

Miramar College, located near the Hourglass Park and softball fields, has over 10,000 students and offers many diverse courses. The college has been undergoing major upgrades lately as well, including a new parking structure and $50 million library/learning resource center.

Mira Mesa may also be one of the last neighborhoods where you can buy a nice single-family home at an affordable price. Though the area may lack the pizzazz of neighborhoods like Hillcrest or North Park, Mira Mesa does offer every convenience imaginable from shopping, entertainment, restaurants and parks. The area seems limited in its restaurant choses, but it does have a great selection of Pho for those who are enjoy the warm Vietnamese noodle dishes.

What the area may lack in restaurant choices, it makes up for in breweries. The newest, located on Mira Mesa Boulevard, is the Green Flash Brewery. The Green Flash boasts a large tasting room and outdoor seating. It is quickly becoming a fast favorite in the neighborhood. Other breweries include AleSmith Brewing Company, Callahan's Brewery & Pub, and the Hess Brewing Company.

Of course the Mira Mesa community has a lot more than food and drink to offer. There are eight community parks, a senior center, an ice arena, an aquatic complex, multiple shopping centers and a state-of-the-art movie theater. Epicentre offers entertainment for the teen crowd with regular concerts featuring local and national bands.

The neighborhood also has several yearly attractions that are quite popular like the annual Mira Mesa Street Fair, held each fall. The street fair is a great opportunity to socialize with the community in a fun-filled, festival atmosphere. There is entertainment, food and exhibits featuring art, crafts and local businesses. During the Halloween season, the Monster Manor creeps up in the Target Shopping Center parking lot and the community does it up right for the 4th of July with a huge celebration including food and vendors at the Community Park, BBQ, a parade and, of course, fireworks.

Not to be missed is the weekly farmers market on Tuesdays from 3-7 p.m. at Mira Mesa High School. If you are looking for some farm fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, specialty foods, farm fresh eggs, fish, baked goods, cheeses, olive oils, honey, jams and jellies, arts and crafts, boutique items, clothing, accessories and more be sure to stop by each week to get your fill.

There is definitely a sense of community pride in Mira Mesa. Despite the large population, the community has a small-town appeal and seems dedicated to the continuation of its neighborhood events and annual festivities making it a great place live - right in the heart of San Diego.
