A vibrant community among rolling hills in North San Diego County
Twenty miles north of downtown San Diego among the beautiful rolling hills and canyons along the east and west side of the Interstate 15 freeway is Rancho Bernardo. Also known as "RB," the community of Rancho Bernardo has a population of 45,000 people and is part of the City of San Diego.
Rancho Bernardo is separated into two ZIP codes, 92127 and 92128. Homes to the west of freeway I-15 are in the 92127. Homes on the east side of I-15 are in 92128. Some of the subdivisions include Bernardo Heights, Vista Del Lago, Gatewood Hills, The Greens, and The Trails. To the west are new communities of 4S Ranch and Santaluz. Senior living communities such as Seven Oaks and Oaks North have resort-style amenities including swimming pools, tennis courts, fitness facilities and social activities. The Oaks North senior community is built around the Oaks North Golf Course. Other golf courses nearby are The Bernardo Heights Country Club and the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course.
"There is a huge variety of home styles and prices in Rancho Bernardo," said Gretchen Pagnotta, a local Realtor who owns property in Rancho Bernardo. Having sold real estate in this area since 1979, Pagnotta is very familiar with the different neighborhoods and home values. "Condos start at $200,000's, patio homes at $300,000's, single family homes in the $400,000's and luxury homes $800,000-plus," she said. "Some of the homes have gorgeous golf course and or mountain views."
Being a few miles from the coast, home prices are lower according to Pagnotta. "Compared to the same square footage in a home in Carmel Valley or the coastal cities of Del Mar and Encinitas, you're going to get so much more for the money," she said. Rancho Bernardo has tremendous value."
Rancho Bernardo is part of the City of San Diego. A community council represents the area with the goal to preserve and enhance the quality of life for its residents. The council interfaces with government agencies, utilities and other influencing factors on issues specifically directed toward Rancho Bernardo.
There is healthy retail activity as well as a variety of businesses in this neighborhood. The Westwood Shopping Center and the Rancho Bernardo Town Center offer convenient places for residents to shop. Companies in the area include Sony, Hewlett-Packard, the Eastman Kodak Company, LSI Corporation, BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman. Rancho Bernardo is also home to one of the oldest operating wineries in Southern California - the Bernardo Winery established in 1889.
In 2007, the Witch Creek Fire burned through Rancho Bernardo and several other areas of San Diego County. It was the fourth-largest wildfire in the state's history, burning hundreds of homes in Rancho Bernardo. Many residents had only minutes to evacuate. Afterward, larger, more lavish houses were rebuilt.
Great weather year round allows residents to enjoy many outdoor activities such as swimming, cycling, walking, golf, gardening and tennis. Residents enjoy being freeway close to beaches, snow-capped mountains and all of the attractions that San Diego has to offer. The combination of weather, location and lifestyle has made Rancho Bernardo an attractive place to live for young families as well for seniors looking for a wonderful place to enjoy retirement.
